Hurting American Families

  • Representative Calvert voted for the 2025 Republican budget that would require massive cuts to Medicaid or Medicare, according to the non-partisan CBO. Despite the warnings from CBO, Representative Calvert decided to vote for a bill that can cut Medicaid coverage from as many as 142,000 constituents within his district and food assistance from as many as 31,000.
  • Representative Calvert voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The bill removes limitations on specific activities a victim has to be engaging in to be classified as a hate crime, gives authorities greater ability to engage in investigations, and provides funding to help local agencies pay for investigations. The act is named in honor of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Shepard was a 21 year old who was tortured and murdered by his classmates for being gay and James Byrd was lynched and murdered by two white supremacists. Ken Calvert voted against making it easier to investigate and prosecute these crimes.

Talking Points

Here are talking points to guide your calls or emails.

I’m calling to urge you not to cut health care, Social Security or important services that Americans rely on every day. Taking health care away from families, Social Security away from seniors, or school lunches away from kids is not the way to pay for tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk.

  • This includes protecting Medicaid. Medicaid provides health care for millions of seniors, kids, and families. Don’t cut Medicaid benefits, services, or funding to doctors.
  • It also means protecting Social Security and Medicare. These are benefits Americans have paid for and earned.
  • Don’t cut other programs that help regular Americans, like public education and school lunches, veterans benefits, food safety, and air traffic controllers.

Don’t allow Congress to cut these programs and don’t allow Elon Musk to eliminate them through DOGE.
